NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) is a joint initiative of the IITs and IISc Bangalore, funded by the Ministry of Education, that has been producing free video lecture courses since 2003. Each course typically runs 8-12 weeks, follows a structured weekly syllabus with assignments, and ends with a proctored certification exam held at designated centres across India for a nominal fee.
Unlike many free online course platforms, an NPTEL certificate carries real academic weight in India — many engineering colleges accept NPTEL certification for credit transfer or as an added qualification, and it is recognised by recruiters as evidence of self-directed learning in a specific technical subject.
How It Works
1. Browse courses
Search by subject (engineering, science, humanities, management) and filter by course duration and level.
2. Enroll for free
Course enrollment and video lectures are completely free — you only pay if you choose to sit the certification exam.
3. Complete weekly assignments
Most courses require weekly quizzes; your assignment scores count toward your final certificate grade.
4. Register for the exam
If you want a certificate, register separately (for a fee) for the end-of-course proctored exam at a nearby centre.
