Understanding GPA and CGPA
GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance in a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) measures your overall performance averaged across all semesters completed so far. Most Indian universities and NIELIT-affiliated courses use a 10-point grading scale, where each subject's marks are converted into grade points before being averaged.
GPA for a semester is calculated as the sum of grade points earned across all subjects, divided by the number of subjects. CGPA extends this by averaging the GPA of every semester you have completed, which is why it only changes gradually — a single bad semester has less effect on CGPA than it does on that semester's own GPA.
How It Works
GPA calculation
Enter the total number of subjects and the sum of grade points earned across them for one semester to get that semester's GPA.
CGPA calculation
Enter the number of semesters completed and the sum of all your semester GPAs to get your overall CGPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my CGPA different from the average of my GPAs?
If different semesters had different numbers of credit hours or subjects, a simple average of GPAs can differ slightly from a credit-weighted CGPA. This calculator uses a simple average; check your institution's exact method for official records.
Can CGPA decrease even with good grades?
Yes — if a given semester's GPA is lower than your CGPA so far, it will pull your cumulative average down even if the grades in that semester were still passing grades.
