What Makes a Password Actually Strong
A strong password resists two main kinds of attack: dictionary attacks, where an attacker tries common words and known leaked passwords, and brute-force attacks, where every possible combination is tried systematically. Length matters more than complexity — a 16-character password with a mix of lowercase letters is often harder to crack than a short 8-character one with symbols, simply because there are exponentially more combinations to try as length increases.
This tool generates passwords using your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (window.crypto.getRandomValues), the same class of randomness used in security-sensitive applications, rather than a weaker predictable random function.
How It Works
1. Set the length
12-16 characters is a good baseline for most accounts; use longer for sensitive accounts like email or banking.
2. Choose character types
Mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols increases the pool of possible characters, raising the number of combinations an attacker must try.
3. Generate and check strength
The strength indicator scores your password on length and character variety.
4. Copy and store safely
Use the Copy button, then save it in a password manager rather than reusing it across multiple sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this password generated and stored on a server?
No. The password is generated entirely in your browser using JavaScript and is never sent to or stored on any server.
Is a longer password always better than a complex one?
Generally yes — each additional character multiplies the number of possible combinations, which is usually a bigger security gain than adding more symbol variety to a shorter password.
