About the Gregorian Calendar

The calendar used across most of the world today, including India for official and business purposes, is the Gregorian calendar — a solar calendar introduced in 1582 to correct small drifts that had built up in the earlier Julian calendar over centuries. A standard year has 365 days across 12 months, with an extra day added in February every leap year to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the sun, which takes slightly more than 365 days.

This page reads your device's system clock to display today's day, date, month and year, refreshing automatically if the date changes while the page stays open.

Tip: India also officially uses the Indian National Calendar (Saka calendar) alongside the Gregorian calendar for certain government communications, though the Gregorian calendar is what's used for school, business and most everyday purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a leap year determined?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except for century years, which must be divisible by 400 to qualify — this is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
